Re-Buy Tournaments

Some tournaments offer the option to re-buy after you have been knocked out. This essentially allows you to buy back in to the tournament with your original number of starting chips. While this may seem unfair, bear in mind that the re-buy value goes into the prize pool and these events can therefore have a considerable amount of money involved in them as beginners continually pay the re-buy fee after getting knocked out.

Know you may have to re-buy

Experienced players often enter a tournament knowing that they are likely to re-buy, sometimes several times. You may lose out to bad luck or a single wrong decision and this allows you to get back into the action and maximizes your chances of winning.
Often players may test their luck at the early stages of a tournament, knowing that they can re-buy if Lady Luck isnt on their side. This also gives the opportunity to test the other players to find out who is aggressive and who will call, raise or fold consistently when threatened.

The golden first hour

The general rule is that players are allowed to make as many re-buys as they like during the first hour of a tournament, and after the hour has passed, they are only allowed to make a final re-buy which is often known as an add-on in Holdem Poker Circles.

As the final hour, the add-on stage, draws close, most players will usually become more conservative as they protect their chip stack to take full advantage of the add-on.

Obviously a player who is sitting on a mountain of chips will think twice about taking up the add-on, while a player who is short-stacked will welcome the add-on to better their position against their opponents.

Think before you re-buy
Calmly considering your options is the only way to make the decision about re-buying. Often, it can simply be throwing good money after bad. Dont re-buy if you have been on a losing streak all through the tournament. You may be off your game or on tilt and will only lose your new chips.
